How to create a dynamic dashboard in Google Sheets?

Google Sheets is undoubtedly an effective tool for tracking, analyzing, and summarizing your business data.

However, it can be challenging to visualize and make data-driven decisions when your data is scattered across multiple sheets and tabs!

This is why creating a Google Sheets dynamic dashboard is a necessity.

A dynamic dashboard simplifies how you manage, analyze, and access your data, turning complex datasets into clear, visual, and actionable insights accessible from one place.

There are two ways you can build a dynamic dashboard inside Google Sheets:

  1. Create your own using Google Sheets automations, functions, and tables.
  2. Use Sheetify CRM, Sheetify Bookkeeping, and Sheetify Projects business toolkits (or all three!)

Are you tired of digging through endless rows of your raw business data to find a key performance indicator (KPI) or essential metrics? This article is for you!

What is a Google Sheets dynamic dashboard?

A Google Sheets dashboard is a powerful way to bring all your key data together into one clear, visual workspace.

Essentially, it’s a dedicated tab that serves as a hub for tracking metrics, monitoring progress, and making informed decisions, all in real-time.

By combining functions, formatting tools, and built-in visuals like charts and graphs, Google Sheets dashboards let you easily transform your raw data into actionable insights.

And as a dynamic dashboard, it automatically updates when data changes occur within any Google Sheet tab, keeping your graphs and charts current with minimal manual effort!

A dynamic dashboard can be used to consolidate all types of data, from project management to finances, customer relationship tracking, and beyond.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can create a dynamic dashboard in Google Sheets now using the two methods above.

How to build a dynamic dashboard in Google Sheets?

Thanks to Google Sheets very own built-in tools, you can build your own dynamic dashboard from scratch to showcase your important business data.

Dynamic dashboards can be used to visually track team performance, monitor project progress, manage revenue and spending, and more with ease.

Here’s how you can create a dynamic dashboard in Google Sheets:

  1. Open Google Sheets and rename the document something relevant (e.g., Team Sales).
  2. Add clear column headers for your data in the first row (e.g., Date, Product, Sales, Region).
  3. Manually enter your data or import it from a CSV file or Google Forms.
  4. Ensure there are no merged cells (these can often break formulas) and make sure your formatting is consistent.
  5. Highlight the data you want to visualize (like completion rates or task distribution).
  6. Click ‘Insert > Chart’ to generate a visual chart or graph.
  7. Google Sheets will suggest a chart automatically, but you can switch between bar, pie, line, or other types in the chart editor.
  8. Customize the chart by adjusting colors, labels, and titles.
  9. Add additional charts for other key data points.
  10. Alternatively, you can ask Gemini to build visual charts or graphs for you.

Next, you must create a new dedicated sheet for your dynamic dashboard. To do that:

  1. Click ‘+’ at the bottom of Google Sheets to add a new sheet.
  2. Rename it to something like ‘Dashboard View’.
  3. Copy your chart(s) from the data sheet and paste them into the new dashboard tab (and delete the originals to keep things tidy).
  4. Arrange your charts for readability by grouping them by category or importance.
  5. Use consistent color schemes (e.g., green for completed tasks, red for overdue).
  6. Resize your charts, and ensure you have clear titles so your team can quickly interpret the data.

And as you update the project data, your dashboard visuals will update automatically!

Once you’ve created your dynamic dashboard, you’ll need to protect your dashboard to prevent accidental edits. To do this:

  1. Right-click the tab and select ‘Protect sheet’.
  2. Click ‘Set permissions’.
  3. Limit editing access to yourself or specific team members.
  4. Show a warning when users attempt to edit (optional).

Next, you can share your dynamic dashboard with your team:

  1. Click ‘Share’ in the top-right corner of your Google Sheets spreadsheet.
  2. Type your team member's email address (or change access to Anyone with the link).
  3. Choose viewer, commenter, or editor roles depending on your audience.

Note: While this method gives you a functional and visual overview of your data, it’s still fairly manual.

For automation, conditional formatting options, or deeper interactivity, you'll need deeper Google Sheets technical knowledge to insert a Google Apps Script into your dashboard.
