How to hide sheets in Google Sheets?

Want to keep some of your Google Sheets private? Or maybe you simply want to tidy things up by showing only the most relevant tabs on your Google Sheets workbook?

Instead of deleting your sheets forever, you can hide entire sheets in Google Sheets and then bring those sheets back at a later time.

Hiding sheets is ideal for teams that want to temporarily conceal reference tabs or backup data, allowing them to maintain a clean and streamlined workbook at all times.

To hide sheets in Google Sheets, all you need to do is:

  1. Right-click the tab name at the bottom of the sheet.
  2. Select ‘Hide sheet’.

Let’s break down how you can hide sheets in Google Sheets using the steps above.

How to hide sheets in Google Sheets?

  1. Open the Google Sheet workbook that contains the sheet (tab) you want to hide.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, find the sheet you want to hide.
  3. Right-click the tab name.
  4. Select ‘Hide sheet’ from the drop-down list.

And that’s it! Once clicked, the tab will instantly disappear from your view, with the data remaining safely stored inside Google Sheets, ready for you to bring back at any moment!

Note: Hiding a sheet doesn't restrict access, and anyone with editing permissions can still unhide it.

You are also unable to hide a sheet if it's the only tab within the workbook.

How to unhide a sheet in Google Sheets?

Okay, so what if you’ve hidden a tab and need to bring it back? Well, unhiding a sheet in Google Sheets is just as easy as hiding it! Follow the steps below to find out how:

  1. Open your Google Sheets spreadsheet.
  2. Go to the top menu and click ‘View.’
  3. Hover over ‘Hidden sheets’ from the drop-down menu.
  4. If you’ve hidden any sheets previously, Google Sheets will show you how many are currently concealed, but if nothing is hidden, the ‘Hidden sheets’ option will be grayed out.

Once unhidden, the sheet tab will display at the bottom alongside your other visible tabs, just like it appeared before.

How to hide multiple sheets in Google Sheets?

What if you want to hide multiple tabs at once? The good news is that you can hide multiple sheets in one action! To do this:

  1. To hide adjacent tabs: Click the first tab, hold down ‘Shift’, then click the last tab in the range you want to hide.
  2. To hide non-adjacent tabs: Hold ‘Ctrl (or Command on Mac)’ and click each tab you want to hide.
  3. Right-click on any of the highlighted tabs and click ‘Hide sheets’ from the drop-down menu.
  4. And that’s all done! Your selected sheets are now out of view (but still safely stored).

Note: You can’t unhide all Google Sheets sheets within your workbook.

  • You can unhide these sheets at any time, one by one, by clicking the ‘View > Hidden Sheets’ drop-down menu in the top menu.

How to lock sheets in Google Sheets?

Sometimes, rather than hiding a sheet, you may want to protect it from accidental edits or unauthorized changes.

Locking a sheet essentially ensures your data stays intact while still remaining visible to your clients or team.

Here’s how you can lock a sheet inside Google Sheets:

  1. Open your Google Sheet spreadsheet.
  2. Right-click the sheet you want to protect (the tab at the bottom of the screen).
  3. Select ‘Protect sheet’ from the drop-down to open the ‘Protected sheets and ranges’ sidebar.
  4. Click ‘Add a sheet or range.’
  5. Under ‘Sheet’, choose the tab you want to lock from the dropdown list.
  6. Click ‘Set permissions’.
  7. Decide who can edit the sheet (or restrict access to just yourself).
  8. Select ‘Done.’

And that’s it! Your selected sheet is now locked and safe from unwanted edits!

Why hide sheets in Google Sheets?

Hiding sheets in Google Sheets is a super-easy and powerful way to keep your workspace clean, especially for those working with complex or multi-tab spreadsheets!

Here’s why you might want to hide an entire sheet:

  • Reduce clutter: Easily tuck away reference tabs, archived data, or any backup information you don’t need to see all the time.
  • Stay focused: Highlight the most relevant sheets to streamline collaboration and improve clarity amongst your team or clients.
  • Minimize confusion for others: When sharing a sheet, hiding tabs prevents others from being overwhelmed by any extra data they don’t necessarily need to see.
  • Protect sensitive content: While it’s not a security feature as such, hiding sheets can discourage casual viewers from looking where they shouldn’t be looking.

In short, hiding Google Sheets can help you stay organized, present cleaner data, and work more efficiently overall. All without deleting a thing!
